May 15, 2020 (OTTAWA, ON) — The U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities welcomed the announcement today by the Prime Minister and Ministers Bains and Hajdu, of $450M for continuity of Canada’s academic research system. “Today’s announced funding will safeguard the critical viability of Canada’s research enterprise, and the innovations and discoveries emanating from it that improve quality of life for all Canadians,” said Dr. Gilles Patry, Executive Director of the U15. “It will ensure many of Canada’s best and brightest graduate students and research personnel who found themselves outside the other federal initiatives are supported during this difficult time. Combined with the previous announcement of $291M for research trainees (students and postdoctoral fellows) and research staff at Canadian universities who are supported by federal grants, this represents a very substantial $741M investment, which should be applauded by all in Canada’s research community.”
