Statement — U15 Welcomes Announcement on “Innovation Agenda”

OTTAWA, ON (June 14, 2016) The U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities welcomes the announcement today by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains about next steps in the government’s “Innovation Agenda,” including the creation of six tables for reviewing various aspects of the Canadian innovation system.

“The U15 congratulates Minister Bains on the ambitious agenda he has outlined for building the innovative economy of the future,” says U15 Chair Feridun Hamdullahpur, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo. “Canada’s research-intensive universities are at the heart of this effort, and we thank the Minister for his partnership-driven approach, and his recognition that universities have a significant role to play in the Innovation Agenda.”

Canada’s research-intensive universities will continue to work with government, industry and the not-for-profit sector, Hamdullahpur says. “Our goal is to build a more agile, adaptable and resilient Canada, where the culture of innovation and research excellence thrive.”
