April 10, 2017 (OTTAWA, ON) — The U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities welcomes Science Minister Kirsty Duncan’s release of the Fundamental Science Review today.
“We applaud the federal government’s efforts to improve Canada’s fundamental science ecosystem and our research enterprise,” said U15 Chair Guy Breton, Rector of the University of Montreal.
“The Fundamental Science Review provides an opportunity for Canada to elevate the national conversation on the importance of science and scientific research. Science matters in the day-to-day lives of all Canadians. Research permeates our lives, from life-saving medical discoveries like insulin, to personal computing devices that allow us to access information on anything, anywhere to new policies and practices that help refugees integrate into our communities.”
Canada’s position as an international leader in science and research has been built on the foundation of a robust national funding system. Maintaining and improving this foundation is crucial as governments around the world recognize that science is at the core of strong economic growth and innovation.
“On behalf of The U15, I’d like to thank Minister Duncan for launching the review, and for her commitment to Canadian research excellence,” added Dr. Breton. “The U15 also thanks the members of the expert panel, led by Dr. David Naylor, for their important work on the project.”
The U15 looks forward to reviewing the panel’s recommendations, and to working in partnership with the federal government to advance Canada’s strengths as an innovative and prosperous country.
